Consumer group Which? has revealed that the Christmas lights which are selling online do not have any assurance on a fire hazard and can easily catch fire. In a review conducted by Which? it states that 6 out of 14 sets of lights bought from online market sellers had failed to pass quality and safety tests.
While conducting the safety tests Which? said that two light sets became so much heated that it began two melt while others had the risk of causing electric shocks. Which? said that lights were becoming extremely heated which is quite uncommon in these lights. If the lights are getting so much heat it can have a potential danger of catching fire due to a short-circuit.
The consumer group had advised the retail consumers to be very careful while buying the lights online and only buy after checking the quality and assurance from the seller. For this, it had recommended that the retail consumers should only buy lights from recognized and trusted sellers.
Natalie Hitchins head of home products and services said that many lights bought online are not safe and do not meet the safety parameters and have the potential to catch a fire.
Which? had also requested the government to make safety rules that give safety as the top priority. It also urged the government to set legal responsibility on the online sellers and prevent them from selling unsafe products on the online sites. It had also asked the online sites to sell their products only after doing the safety and assurance checks.
National Trading Standards had also urged the customers to not only buy the product that offers the least price but to also check the reputation and the trustworthiness of the seller and the product before purchasing the Christmas lights. It’s better to spend a bit more and buy it from the trusted sources rather than saving a few bucks and buying from an online source.
