Ambient Mode For Google Assistant Turns Some Handsets Into Smart Displays

After first touting it in September, Google now has showed precisely how its latest ambient mode for Assistant will operate on handsets. The concept is to make your handset more helpful by while it is charging by allowing you see Google photo pictures, control your smart home devices, play music, and more. The function began launching out to Xiaomi and Nokia devices previous week, and will arrive to an OEM called Transsion and Sony in the weeks to come, as per media reports.

In a video, Arvind Chandrababu (the Android product manager) claimed that the feature makes it simple to complete tasks with only a few clicks while your handset is charging. “Now with one click, you can check at what time your first meeting is this week, you can set the alarm, you can have a slide show of your pics, and you can also disable the lights.” He claimed that the experience is “integrated deeply” into the Android operating system and that Google has a series of similar features scheduled for OEM machines moving forward.

Much similar to the Pixel Stand, there is both a lockscreen that displays the time over a slideshow for Google Photos, if wished for. Clicking through shows alert cards with calls, messages, weather, appointments, and more. At the end is a series of logos for turning on “do not disturb” mode, maintaining smart lights, and more.

The experience is intended for handsets that do not have their own charging display lock implementations, which may clarify why it is not arriving to the Pixel and other phones, apparently comprising Samsung handsets. Chandrababu claimed that it might arrive to “specific devices” with Android 8 and more in the weeks to come. When it does, you will get an alert to “see your personal updates and photos.”
