Artherosclerosis: Scientists identify a new protein in immune cells

Scientists have discovered for the first time a new protein in cells called macrophages which promotes the disease. Earlier studies revealed that macrophages in the immune system absorb the surplus cholesterol and too much of it can transform the cells into foam cells. These foam cells when they become heavy with cholesterol can deposit in the walls of the arteries causing the blockages.

A protein called Tribbles Pseudokinase 1 (TRIB 1) is the main reason behind the deadly cardiovascular disease which is caused by humans. Scientists have been studying the deposits in the arteries in mice and have detected macrophages with the rich cholesterol content. It is this TRIB 1 protein present in the macrophage cells that determine how much cholesterol the cells can carry before getting converted into foam cells.

The study is aimed at significantly improving and dealing with the disease. The scientists have also been studying how the coding gene found in the protein cause it transforms the cells into foam cells which make it heavy and are thus deposited in the arterial walls.

The study had been going on for several years but without any success. It is for the first time that scientists have found this protein which seems to be the ultimate factor for the disease that is quite common in humans these days due to the unhealthy food habits and other lifestyle factors.

The study has shown that high levels of the TRIB 1 protein in the cells cause its receptors to absorb the extra cholesterol in macrophage cells. When the TRIB 1 protein is taken out of the cells the extra cholesterol is reduced and thus the disease is brought under control.

The researchers used different mice to test various samples of the arteries and found this protein in the walls of the arteries which is found in the macrophages.
