Amazon Claims It Will Launch A New Grocery Store Structure In 2020

Amazon is wading more into the physical retail realm as it verified strategies to start a different kind of grocery shop next year. Reports previously this year recommended Amazon was operating on a low-priced grocery format as an option to Amazon Go and Whole Foods.

The firm claimed to the media that it is “starting a grocery shop in Woodland Hills [a Los Angeles suburban neighborhood] next year.” As per media, it posted 4 job listings for the store, which it defined as “first grocery store by Amazon.” It is appointing 2 grocery associates who will handle points of sale and replenish stock, a team lead, and a food service associate who will operate food counters.

Amazon has allegedly inked a lease in Woodland Hills for a 35,000 sq. ft. space. The grocery shop will vary from Whole Foods and it will not employ the cashierless technology of Amazon Go shops, rather than selecting for conventional checkouts. Amazon has not disclosed what the shop will be dubbed as yet, whether it will start additional locations or what the pricing and product selection will seem like.

The media, which earlier reported on Amazon extending its array of grocery alternatives, claimed previous month that the retailer was aiming for stores in Los Angeles (having inked over a dozen leases in the region), Philadelphia, and Chicago, and was looking for spaces in the New York region, Connecticut, and New Jersey. As per the media, the new stores by Amazon will provide “mainstream groceries such as Oreos and soda,” as well as prepared foods.

Along with the forthcoming sop, Amazon Go and Whole Foods, Amazon has made other forays into brick and mortar retail locations with Amazon 4-Star and Amazon Books. The firm also provides grocery delivery via Prime Now, Amazon Fresh, and its core site.
